AND HANDLING:
LOLER - Lifting
Operations
and Lifting
Equipment
Regulations
1998, covers
all Lifting
equipment.
They apply
in addition
to the PUWER
1998 Regulations,
to offer adequate
safeguard
to people
working with
lifting equipment.
The owner/user
is required
to:

PRESSURE
SYSTEMS:
The Pressure
Systems Safety
Regulations
2000 have
replaced the
Pressure Systems
and Transportable
Gas Containers
Regulations
1989 and require
pressure systems
to be inspected
in accordance
with a Written
Scheme of
Examination.
The regulations
apply to owners
and users
of relevant
fluids including
steam, gases
under pressure
and any fluid
kept artificially
under pressure
and which
becomes a
gas when released
to the atmosphere.

compliance,
by means of
thorough examination
together with
Written Scheme
of Examination
documentation.
LOCAL
EXHAUST VENTILATION
PLANT:
The Control
of Substances
Hazardous
to Health
(COSHH) Regulations
2002 require
the employer
to operate
and maintain
Extraction
and Local
Exhaust Ventilation
Plant in a
safe condition.
An initial
COSHH assessment
should be
performed,
to determine
the level
of hazard
and control
measure required.
From then
on a 14 monthly,
6 monthly,
or monthly
examination
and test by
a competent
person is
required.
ISI can arrange
full assessment,
examination
and certification
in this area.
POWER
PRESSES:
PUWER - The
Provision
and Use of
Work Equipment
Regulations
1998, requires
that Power
Presses with
automatic,
photoelectric
or interlocking
guards are
inspected
every 6 months.
Power Presses
with fixed
guards or
enclosed tooling
should be
examined every
12 months,
by a competent
person.
In addition
to this, PUWER
requires that
process machinery
with guards
should be
inspected
regularly
and although
intervals
are not specified,
similar ones
to the above
are advised.
For paper
guillotines
and plastic
injection
moulding machines,
there are
Guidance Notes
which also
recommend
periodic safety
inspections
by competent
persons.
WORK
EQUIPMENT
EXAMINATIONS:
The relatively
new laws of
PUWER 1998
have a wide
definition
of work equipment.
It includes
some equipment
that previous
legislation
did not cover.
Playground
equipment
and surfaces
have defined
parameters
for routine
inspection.

service for
local authorities.
